Great weather forecast tempted us to make plans for Tower Gully on Ben Nevis, one of the finest and longest gullies to ski in Scotland. The snow in some sections of the gully on the ascent was a little firmer than we would have liked so plan B was called into operation. A fine ski of No 3 gully into Coire na Ciste was a worthy alternative.

Little or no wind, great visibility with hazy views to the surrounding mountain ranges. FL above summit.

Mainly soft in Tower Gully with some firmer sections in critical areas e.g the exposed Tower Scoop traverse and the gully headwall. No 3 gully had softer snow on the headwall and nice spring snow down to the lochan in Coire Na Ciste

We walked from the north face car park to the cic hut. Climbed up tower gully, fair bit of debris falling towards us. Ice axe and crampons were needed. As it was judged to be too icy to ski, we made our way to gully 3 and it was very nice.

Clear skies, little wind. Sunny.

Tower gully was solid from the scoop level. A wee bit softer towards the snow line. No 3 gully has slightly softer snow.

Ben Nevis - number 4 gully, Coire Na Ciste

blue sky and hot - more like mid June and couldn't be more different than the usual Ben conditions for late March.

Drop in ok with cornices very stable having slumped down into the gully, the surface of the upper section was unfortunately fairly well chopped up from numerous climbing ascents/descents. Number 3 gully although steeper at the drop in had far better surface conditions in its upper section. Number 5 gully looked particularly inviting despite the narrows lower down. Able to ski to the foot of the coire at the lochans so circa 270m vertical

Ascent of Stob an Chul Coire from the Gondola top station including a pre opening visit to the top of The Braveheart Chair.

Mist and light drizzle at 10am gradually clearing to breaks in the cloud and finally blue skies, albeit with some mist - very atmospheric. Below zero up top and 3c-4c at the top of the gondola. Winds light and variable though slightly more blowy later in the day.

Ice, breakable crust and some spring snow so lots of challenges but continual snow basically from bottom of the Alpha. Back Corries are surely holding the best snow in Scotland in terms of quantity at the present time with east face of Aonach Mor particularly loaded.
