A long nordic ski tour we have been wanting to do for years.
On saturday all the perfect ingredients for a grand day out were in alignment - so we went for it. Left a car at Invercauld, then
Start approx. 2km north of Glenshee by Cluny burn. Up N-side of Sron na Gaoithe ridge and skirted south side of Cairn of Claise. Across to Tolmount, Knaps of Fafernie, Fafernie. Amazing snow cover here and good travelling on Nordic skis.
Then skirted round south side of Carn an ?Sagairt Mor and Beag and onwards to Cac Carn Mor on Lochnagar. Returned to the Stuic, then crossed to north side of Carn an t-Sagairt Beag for an excellent long ski down via Allt a?Choire Duibh and track by Feindallacher Burn. Fun skiing down the tracks in Ballochbuie Forest and finished at 2nd car park close to Bridge of Dee (Invercauld).

One of the best days out this season - a fantastic tour
28km, 7.5hrs
:: Weather Conditions
Fantastic - Blue skies most of the day and roasting in sun.
:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion

:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion
Excellent conditions. Extensive deep cover on N and W facing slopes, though elsewhere patchy below 900m. Skiable from the roadside. Odd icy patch and sastrugi on the plateau, superb packed powder turning to spring snow lower down.

Starting at the Cairnwell snow gates, skinned over Meal Odhar to Glas Maol. South to summit of Creag Leacach and then west down Hesitation Gully to the car park at the Devil's Elbow. Hitch hike back to car park- First car picked us up, thank you.. Then skin N and NE to Coire Fionn, up the north ridge and round to Claise, avoiding the pistes. Descended the back of Garbh Coire, carefully avoiding the heavily loaded bulges on the east and south sides of the bowl. Skied out directly to the road in Glen Cluny and hitched back up to the ski area. This time it took 20 minutes to get a lift. Apologies for the lack of photos.
:: Weather Conditions
Cold air, calm and baking hot in full sun all day.
:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion
Mixed on approach in the morning, all sorts; icy on the steep face of GM. About a foot of very dry and cold powder in Hesitation where the main bowl was untracked. Respect to the boarders and dog who halted their boot pack up on the south side of the coire to stand back and watch our descents. Skis stayed on to the burn below the road. Still cold snow to ascend on in the afternoon, icy sastrugi on exposed ridges, everywhere else soft. Powder turning to spring in Garbh, still loose yet setting up nicely in the afternoon sun. Air still very cold. No difficulty skiing to the footbridge by the road.
