Southern Cairngorms - Sat 27th Jan 2007

:: Tour Route(s) or Location Skied/Ridden
From glenshee car park up to carn a gheoidh.
:: Weather Conditions
Some sun, winds light apart from the summit . Freezing level probably around 800m. Very cold on the summit with wind.
:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion
Skinned up through pistes via butcharts , snow conditions good throughout, although while contouring round above loch votrochan there was lots of heather appearing, but it didn't make much difference as we were traversing round rather than skiing downhill. Above 800m or so the snow was firm and a little icy but still good for turning (better than breakable crust). Lots of snow on surounding hills to the north and NW. Was thawing at car park level on the return (2C).

Glas Maol from Ski centre.
:: Weather Conditions
Excellent weather if a little blustery on the tops. One or two isolated snow showers but generally lots of sun and strong winds.
:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion
Headed east since weather forecast for the west didn't look to good. It was good choice for weather but snow is becoming a little limited now.
Short day and after walk in managed to skin from Meall Odahr to near the summit with a couple of blank bits on the col and on the summit plateau. Snow was hard and chattery on the way up but softened up beautifuly for the descent. Droped into Glas Maol corrie from about half way down the west side where cornice did not look so imposing. Great ski down on grippy softening snow. Then crossed back to Meall odhar and skied piste home again.
Looks like still plenty snow on the plateau East towards Lochnagar but it is only at the higher levels now. Looking North To Ben Avon, Ben a Bhuird and the Cairngorm Plateau looks much more expansive with lower snow levels.

Carn an Tuirc from the bridge on the A93, descent of the NE burn line (where an old ski tow was once sited, called 'turkey's gulley' by some skiers)
:: Weather Conditions
Oh, look, I think it's lifting a bit. Oh no it isn't...
It was a bit grey and a bit damp to be honest.
:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion
Although the snow was wet, it was possible to ski from the road. Snow banks on the south side of the burn gave good access, thawing rather gluey snow, but it was great to be out!

Saturday: Big Packs & Telemark skis, from Glenshee: - Glas Maol draglift, via Tom Buidhe - Tolmount - Cairn Bannoch to camp in Allt an Da Chraobh Bheath (below Carn an t-Sagairt Beag) - then ski out Sunday down the Feindallacher Burn through Ballochbuie Forest to Invercauld Bridge
:: Weather Conditions
Sunshine & some cloud on Saturday, then light rain overnight & whiteout Sunday morning (so cancelled our objective of Lochnagar)
:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion
Fantastic snow, particularly from Glenshee skii area southwards. Frozen crust with windblown powder. Clearly lots of unbonded slab when excavating shelters etc!!! Snow much more sparse on descent north from Carn an t-Sagairt Beag etc, but fun picking route down the burns etc

An Soccach from Glenshee car park
:: Weather Conditions
Sunshine and clouds with good breaks and an increasing wind
:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion
The southern Cairngorms around glenshee have loads of snow with amazing cover from 750 meters and even down to valley level on some of the leads. The snow on sunday was not great for skiing as it had thawed and the top layer was very slushy in the warmth. We had a good tour though, with fantastic views and once again had no need to take off our skis apart from to cross the main road and the river.
